Friends of Hagg Wood
EVENTS PROGRAMME - AUTUMN 2011
Saturday 24th September - Visit to Fulford Community Orchard
Meet at 12.30pm at the start of Intake Lane outside the children's play area for a cycle ride to Fulford Community Orchard, which was the subject of Colin Campbell's interesting talk at our AGM in May. We can choose to cycle via Gypsey Wood through the back lanes, or go via the cycle track beside the A1079, to Heslington, where we will stop for lunch at the Charles V pub, before going on to the orchard to arrive around 3pm for a picnic. If you cannot make the cycle ride, the Friends of Fulford Community Orchard are also having a picnic in the orchard on Sunday 18th September from 12.30pm to 4pm together with music and activities for children, which we are also invited to attend. The orchard can be reached by car by taking the left lane after the Designer Centre entrance in Fulford towards its South Entrance, looking left, and by parking nearby. Please bring your own picnic refreshments.
Sunday 9th October - Fungal Foray
Local amateur mycologist Findlay Cook will be leading a fungal foray in Hagg Wood starting at 2pm. Meet at the notice board beside the inner gate at the Intake Lane entrance to the wood. Please wear stout footware. The event is free to FHW members and £3 for non-members.
Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd October - Hedgerows in Historic Landscapes
This is a weekend conference to be held at the Dunnington Sports Centre, Common Road, from 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday, including presentations by Stephen Moorhouse on the landscape history of our nearby local medieval settlements, and by Barry Wright on our recent hedgerow survey around Dunnington. There will also be two field trips on Sunday, one looking at the historic landscape and the other at the botanical evidence, starting at 10am on Sunday at the Sports Centre. The cost, including tea/coffee and buffet lunch on the Saturday, will be £12.50 for FWH members, and £14.50 for non-members. A picnic lunch, warm clothes and sturdy footware are recommended for the field trips on the Sunday. Please book with Linda on 01904-489127 by Friday 14th October. Further details of the conference and how to book a place are given here.
Friday 18th November - The Secret World of Badgers
Badger expert Jane Payne will give us an illustrated presentation on these fascinating creatures at 8.00 pm in the Tower Room of Dunnington Parish Church, following our recent field trip to Cropton Forest. Please note the new location and day of the week for this meeting.
Sunday 8th January - New Year Lunch & Walk
Our annual invitation for our members to join us for our New Year lunch to add some new year cheer to the mid-winter scene, and get some healthy exercise beforehand. We will be meeting for our walk in the wood at 11.30 am outside the Reading Room, and/or join us for the lunch at Dunnington Sports Centre at 1.30pm. Please let David know on 01904 488674 by Wednesday 14th December if you would like to come to the lunch and your meal choice (see Menu here)
