              Events Programme - Autumn 2014

Wednesday 24th September  -   Fungal Foray

With Autumn now upon us, the magical world of fungi beckons. This year we are venturing further afield with a trip to the extensive grounds of York Cemetery, with its large variety of trees and flowers, to join a conducted tour of the fungi that inhabit its many corners at this time of year. We will meet at the Reading Room car park at 5.15pm and then drive to park in York Cemetery for the start of the guided tour at 6pm. Alternatively, meet us at the York Cemetery at 6pm. The cost of the tour is £2.50 which includes tea and biscuits afterwards in the Chapel. Please let David know on 488674 if you need a lift.

Saturday 4th October  -  Cycle Ride to the Tithe Barn

Another chance for some healthy exercise, good food and insights into local  history with a cycle ride from Dunnington to the Tithe Barn in Poppleton (see www.poppleton.net/tithebarn), which has timbers dating back to around 1542. For the cycle ride, meet in Intake Lane next to the Children’s Play Area at 10.30am. We will aim to reach the Lord Nelson Inn on Main Street in Nether Poppleton by 12 noon for lunch, where you are welcome to join us even if you are not cycling. We will then aim to get to the Tithe Barn by 2pm, and by 3pm start our cycle ride back to Dunnington.

Wednesday 26th November -   POP – Protect Our Plants

FHW member Steve Ashby will be drawing on his extensive experience in Plant Health at the York-based Food and Environment Research Agency to give us an illustrated presentation on the continuing challenges posed to our local natural environment and future food supplies by new and imported diseases, and by changes in farming practices which may impact upon the health of important pollinating insects, such as bees. Meet at 8pm in the Dunnington Reading Room. Admission is free to members, non-members £1.50.

Sunday 11th January -   New Year Lunch

Brighten up the dark days of winter by joining us for our now traditional New Year Lunch, again this year at the Dunnington Sports Centre, with an optional woodland walk beforehand to refresh your appetite. Meet at 11.00am outside the Children’s Play Area on Intake Lane for the walk, or at 1.15pm for a drink before the lunch at 1.30pm at the Sports Centre. We need to book you a place at the lunch, so please let  Michael Dunn know on York 489013 or on  mdunn48h@gmail.com  by 20th December  to book your place and your menu choice.  So make a note in your diary to make your booking with Michael before you start your Xmas shopping!

Woodland Working Parties -  Conservation in Action

These will be held on the mornings of Saturdays 13th September, 25th October, 15th November, 6th December and 10th January, so do put these dates in your diary. Meet at 10.00am at the Hagg Farm end of Intake Lane. Bring gloves if you can, and wear stout shoes or wellies.
